Do we own the Domain once we paid for it?

Think of domains a rental agreement. Once you purchase a domain, it is yours for the period you purchased it for which is usually 12 months.
If at the end of this period you do not renew and pay for the next period, then the domain is not yours anymore and someone else could buy it.
